Songs/Fingerplays

“Five Little Kernels”
Five little kernels sizzling in the pot
All of a sudden, one went POP! (count down)
Carnival Song
Sung to: “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad”
I am walking through the carnival,
Happy as can be.
I am walking through the carnival,
Just to see what I can see.
I can see all the games and rides
I can see the popcorn and the food.
I can see the ferris wheel turning.
I see so much to do!!!
Funny Clown
Sung to: “Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, Turn Around”
Funny clown, funny clown,
Spin around.
Funny clown, funny clown
Jump up and down
Funny clown, funny clown,
Touch your toes.
Funny clown, funny clown
Honk your nose.
We Ride the Carousel
Sung to: “The Farmer in the Dell”
 We ride the carousel,
 We ride the carousel,
 Heigh-ho the derry-oh,
 We ride the carousel.
Additional verses: We ride the choo-choo train. We ride the ferris wheel. We eat some cotton candy.
Silly Clowns
Five silly clowns, jumping all around,
Jump so high, then touch the ground.
One silly clown said, “I can’t stay,”
So he turned around and hopped away.
Repeat with four, three, two, one.

Other Ideas

  1. Special “carnival snack” day — make snack mix with popcorn, raisins, maybe add marshmallows for a special treat! Perfect for toddlers/preschoolers to make/eat!
  2. Practicing Letters: Think of things at the carnival that start with each letter of the alphabet, discuss!
  3. Counting: Whenever possible, practice counting! After reading a story, go back and count how many ____ you see. Could be anything you or your child noticed while reading the book!
